PADI ENRICHED AIR NITROX SPECIALTY

Interested in finding out how to extend your bottom time? Then check out one of PADI's most popular specialties - the Enriched Air Diver programme.

It's one of those beautiful vacation dives in the Similan Islands that you'll never forget: The water's warm and inviting, it's sunny and the diving is stunning. It's your second dive and you've been down about half an hour. You glance at your nitrox dive computer and pressure gauge and realise you've still got plenty of time. You wink knowingly at your dive buddy. This is great!

As you drift across the reef, you spot your fellow liveaboard guests. They check their computers, give each other the 'thumbs up' and begin a slow ascent. "Already?" you think to yourself. Then you remember they're diving air, not EANx like you and your buddy. That's why you'll get a longer dive than they will and more chance to see that elusive whale shark!

This highlights two of the most important recent innovations that maximise the time you get to enjoy your dive underwater - dive computers and enriched air. Computers boost your 'no stop' time by crediting you for a multilevel dive. Enriched air reduces nitrogen to give you longer dives. Combine the two, and that vast majority of the time you'll find your dives limited by your gas supply, not by the no decompression limits. If you're in the market for a dive computer, by all means be sure it's enriched air compatible.

We recommend that you take this course on a Similans liveaboard charter, or just prior to joining a dive cruise. You can integrate the course smoothly into your safari and at your own pace, without taking up too much time. Furthermore, you can use the skills you learn to get more bottom time on the liveaboard dives that you make at the Similans once you're qualified too!

The PADI Enriched Air Diver programme emphasises the theoretical and operational considerations involved with enriched air diving. Additionally, you'll get to go on two training dives during the programme.
